Branded as something of a space cadet early on for his wandering imagination and obsession with astronomy, Mike Kiker is a mostly self-taught multi-instrumentalist, composer, and one third of St. James & The Apostles. It all started for him after finding out he had an ear for plucking out simple melodies on a beat-up Casio at the age of 4. Soon enough, he would make short work of guitar, bass, drums & pretty much any instrument he could get his hands on, much to the chagrin of his long-suffering parents & music teachers. It wasn't until going through a myriad of short-lived and dispassionate musical careers as a church organist, jazz musician, playing bass in a cover band & accompanying lounge singers, that Mike decided that the way forward for him lied not in simple recitation, but in music that spoke to one's search for the infinite and higher consciousness. That sensibility shines through in both the brash psychedelia of St. James & The Apostles, as well as his own homemade lo-fi meditative instrumental music. Both projects reach back to the sounds of yesteryear, forsaking most computer technology for the warmth of vintage equipment, but while doing best to avoid outright copying previous styles & fetishizing the past. Soon enough, Mike got his chance to apply his instrumental music to more than just personal enjoyment by scoring the Bristol, PA produced science fiction web series "The Weirdness". After a slow process that amounted in 75 minutes worth of music for that project, Mike was then tasked by the Philly non-profit organization Cinema Ray to create a score for the 1911 silent film "L'Inferno" and to perform it live with the film. After composing a few short themes and recording an overture, it was decided that the best way to approach this particular live scoring was to in essence improvise using these themes as a launching pad to expand upon in the moment. In lesser hands, such an experiment could very easily end in disaster, but thankfully it all holds together for the 72-minute run time. In early 2017, Mike released all of the music for "The Weirdness" & "L'Inferno" together in a 2 CD set dubbed "Soundtracks".
