“So, we were working on “Mid 20’s Skateboarder (I Hope I Don’t Get Hurt)”, and we got pretty fuckin’ excited, so we hit The Beer Store and then headed out to the skate park in the Toronto Beaches. It was a nice day, but school was out, so the place was packed with children and we got scared ‘cuz we had a lot of beers with us and we didn’t feel like making fools of ourselves in front of those judgy little bastards. We did what any mature adults would do when faced with such a problem and got real drunk and waited until it was dark out and there was nobody around. Things were going okay at first but then we got ourselves into the pool and Jon went down. Broken arm. We dropped him off at the hospital…he thinks he’ll be able to start working again soon!”

Drunk, impulsive, and desperate to have fun at any cost.

Long story short Vic (Static Radio NJ) and Ryan (Spanish Gamble) were both at a bar in Brooklyn talking about how they needed to start a new band. Vic said he knew a singer (Luke!) and Ryan said he knew a drummer (Matt from Candy Hearts). The rest is pretty recent history!

In early 2017, Shannon Perez and Chris Tull came together to form Erotic Novels. Perez is known in the New Jersey scene for pouring her heart out as principal songwriter and vocalist for Don Juan Destroyer, I Hope You Die, and Side Bitch, and as the bass player for post-punk dystopian firebrands Strange Things Done in the Midnight Sun. Now she brings her trademark honesty and grit to this project.

The music of Erotic Novels takes the heart-on-sleeve honesty of Perez’s previous projects and mixes it with the sensibilities of guitarist and co-singer/songwriter Tull. He is the mastermind behind Philadelphia punk rock powerhouse the Hellstroms, and the podcast Weekend Quality With Chris Fabulous. Now, Tull’s guitar playing adds an abrasive and up-front style not unlike Blake Schwarzenbach of Jawbreaker or Mitch Mitchell of Guided By Voices.

The pair have been joined by New Jersey staple Bobby C. (The Dead and Gone) on drums, who stitches the two chambers of the band’s creative heart together.

On their first EP, the aptly titled “Debut,” Chris Pierce (who has recorded Night Birds, the Ergs, and many more) documents the group’s signature sound. Perez trades off vocals with Tull on the first single, “Out West On My Own.” The five-song CD was released July 15, 2017 at a special performance with Shellshag and Ellen and the Degenerates at Erotic Novels’ home base: Volume IV studio in New Brunswick, NJ.
