Channeling the legends of the past while keeping a firm eye on the present, Philadelphia’s
Canyon give another interpretation of heavy psychedelic blues. Ranging from the foot stomping
grooves of Grand Funk Railroad to the acid blues jams of Cream and Blue Cheer, Canyon are
truly steeped in the blues and soaked in psych. Beginning in the winter of 2016, guitar player
and singer, Peter Stanko, met drummer and singer, Anthony Bove, while they were both playing
in Philly based psych/drone/shoegaze outfit The Orange Drop. After discovering a shared love
of vintage classic rock and heavy blues, Pete quickly called upon Dean Welsh, a good friend
from LaSalle University and drummer for Peter and Dean’s previous band Radiant Forms, to
complete the trio on bass and vocals. Jamming and writing quickly ensued and the spring of
2016 saw the release of their self titled EP. Warmly described as “a languid blend of heavy
blues rock” Canyon began playing shows in earnest. Recording for the debut full length album,
Radiant Light, began soon after and was released in the fall of 2017. Drummer Anthony Bove
amicably parted ways with the band following the release of Radiant Light and a lineup change
was needed. Dean moveed from bass to drums and Fred Frederick was brought in to cover
bass and lead vocal duties. This new lineup of Canyon, dubbed MkII, recently self-released an
EP of new music in the fall of 2018.
